Robert Channon Wines
This well respected vineyard and winery in Stanthorpe, Queensland, is now available for sale.
With a total area of 40 hectares, the winery was established in 1998 by Robert and Peggy Channon. At an altitude of nearly 950 metres, it is one of Australia’s highest wineries. This elevation and the granite soils create the unique cool climate wine area that is the Queensland Granite Belt.
There are currently 8 hectares planted of Shiraz, Pinot Gris, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Verdelho and Cabernet Sauvignon with plenty of area for additional planting. The two vineyards are both under permanent netting and on a drip irrigation system, drawing water from the nearby lake. There is a 13 hectare water licence. Average annual grape production from the vineyards is in the order of 50 – 60 tonnes.
The winery complex features a cellar door with sales and storage areas, a tasting bench, an office and toilets with rose gardens in front and a stunning view of the lake behind. The winery is in an open plan steel frame building plus a refrigerated container/cool room. The winery is fully equipped for the production, bottling and labelling of white and red wines. There is a second building for wine storage which converts to concert hall mode as the “Swigmore Hall”, where a popular concert series is held each year. The 100th concert was held here recently. A regular audience at these concerts provides good wine sales and a consistent profile for the brand. The two sheds have an area of approximately 576m2.
Singing Lake Cafe
The magical view of the lake gives the perfect setting for the “Singing Lake Café” with an area of approx. 135m2 catering for 60 covers inside with an extra grassed courtyard for ‘al fresco ‘dining under umbrellas or on the verandahs.
On the property is a sound low set 3 bedroom brick dwelling with kitchen, living areas and a double garage/storage. It has its own access and is currently rented at $280 per week. This would be suitable for an owner/occupier to live in or for employees to rent. Underground power is in place to a potential new site for another dwelling if required.
The location of the winery is ideal – high exposure, sealed bitumen road on the northern side of the Granite Belt, just 8 minutes to Stanthorpe.
Robert Channon Wines has an established cellar door trade, sells to restaurants in South East Queensland via a commission agent and has just completed its first export order of verdelho and chardonnay to New Zealand.
It has a Wine Club with a current membership of approximately 250, each receiving two packs of wine per year.
It also has an active mailing list of approximately 2,000 addressees who receive regular newsletters.
Robert Channon Wines was the first Queensland winery to receive 5 stars from James Halliday. Its Verdelho has won the trophy for Queensland’s Best White Wine on four occasions, including three years in a row. At national shows, it has won Champion Chardonnay at the Royal Brisbane Show and Champion Sparkling Wine at the Australian Small Winemakers Show. It has won Champion Queensland Winery at the Royal Brisbane Show (three times) and the Australian Small winemakers Show (three times). Robert Channon Wines have won 26 gold medals and numerous silvers and bronzes since 2001. Robert Channon’s wines were served to Queen Elizabeth 11 during her Brisbane visit and the Verdelho 2009 was chosen as the at the Queensland Parliament’s 150th Anniversary White Wine. All of these wines are from grapes grown in the Robert Channon vineyards and made into wine in the Robert Channon winery.
The property and wine business are offered for sale as a profitable going concern on a walk in walk out basis including vineyard, winery and café equipment (lists available) plus stock at agreed valuation and including the Robert Channon Wines name and brand.
